Rhytidectomy/Facelift/Necklift

What is a Facelift?

The facelift addresses the excess skin of the neck/turkey neck, neck fullness, jowling, poor jawline definition and deflated midface/cheek area. The biggest concern voiced by patients is their fear of looking pulled or unnatural. Our methods result in a very natural restoration of your youthful features. Often times, we may also recommend concurrent procedures such as brow lift, blepharoplasty, or laser skin resurfacing if they complement each other. Comprehensive facial rejuvenation demands that a trained, critical eye evaluates all components of the face to create a harmonious, natural look.

In summary:
  • Facelift surgery repositions the jowls and mid face fat pads to their youthful location
  • Facelift surgery restores the jawline definition
  • Facelift surgery reduces or even eliminates the excess skin/tissue of the neck (waddle or turkey neck)
  • Facelift surgery hides incisions in natural skin creases and behind the hairline
  • Facelift surgery results in a natural, refreshed appearance; never overpulled or windswept look

What are the doctor qualifications and training for Facelift and Necklift surgery?

As double board certified and fellowship trained in both Head and Neck Surgery as well as Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Drs Jacob and Moulthrop have truly unique, advanced training in the complexities of neck liposuction surgery. There is no one template or road map for surgery. We have an advanced understanding of the neck’s form and function. This helps us excel at neck liposuction procedures.

What is involved in Facelift and Necklift surgery?

  1. Consultation. During your consultation, Drs. Jacob and Moulthrop will show you in a mirror what you can expect from the surgery. They will then describe the procedure in detail, including how the incisions are planned and what the surgery entails. Not every person has the same issues, so an individualized approach is taken. Some people may require liposuction, platysmal plication, or correction of asymmetries. In addition to the mirror exam, they will use your photos to illustrate what exactly to expect.
  2. Surgical Procedure. We specialize in deep plane rhytidectomies which reposition the deeper structures of the face to their more youthful position. Most surgeons simply tighten the deeper layers of the face with suturing techniques or so called “mini-lifts.” The deep plane technique ensures that the deeper tissues of the face like the jowls and mid face fat pads are repositioned to their more youthful location. Compared with other techniques, we get much more lasting, natural results. Our incisions are hidden in natural creases and the hairline. Once healed, they are barely appreciable.
  3. Post-Op and Further Recommendations.

How long does it take to recover from Facelift and Necklift surgery?

Many of our patients are curious about the recovery time and procedures for Facelift and Necklift surgery. Facelift and Necklift surgery recovery involves the following steps:

  1. In-hospital recovery….. You will stay overnight. During that night, you will wear a gauze head-dress to apply pressure to the area. The overnight nurses will take care of everything for you. We take every precaution to keep you comfortable and relaxed.
  2. In-home recovery….. You will go home the day after surgery. We ask that you do minimal physical activity for the first day you are home. The third day after surgery, you can go for a leisurely walk. Every night you should sleep elevated. Daily, you will wear a compression dressing that will be provided to you upon discharge. The recovery is surprisingly easy, so we ask that you don’t push yourself too much in the first ten days to two weeks after surgery. By two weeks, you will be ready to participate in any social activity. Be three to four weeks, you will be able to resume full physical activity.
  3. Follow-up consultations….. All sutures will be removed by one week. We will see you multiple times over the next 4-6 months to ensure everything is healing well.

What are the side effects from Facelift and Necklift surgery?

You may experience the following side effects:

  • Temporary numbness in small areas around the face and neck
  • About half of the swelling is gone by two weeks. 80-90% of the swelling will be gone by 6-8 weeks
  • Bruising is generally resolved by 10-14 days. In some areas it can take a bit longer, but makeup greatly helps this.
